Always keeps you wondering how each episode will turn out. Most shows post-1980’s I can usually see “whodunnit” early on, leaving me very bored and I find it useless to watch American Tv or movies anymore. Ive strictly gone to watching only British tv and movies. This is one of my top 3 favorites along with Father Brown and Poirot. But I have to add Miss Marple as well. Anything by Agatha Christie seems to be superb. As I write this, March 31, 2022, there are 22 seasons on dvd out for purchase. The most recent came out just last month so it will be another year before we have a new season available. The first 13 seasons starred John Nettles as the main character, Tom Barnaby. He’s an excellent actor and also brings some delightful humor on occasion to a role that obviously is considered serious as being a detective. Season 14-current stars Neil Dudgeon as his replacement and in character, is Tom Barnaby’s (Nettles) cousin. I like him but that bit of humor that was Nettles, is missing with Dudgeon. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a great actor and I enjoy his episodes, it’s just a bit of change to get used to after so many seasons with Nettles. His wife is lovely and a major improvement over the very boring, useless character that Nettles had to work with as his wife, Jane Wymark. I never cared for her at all and actually enjoyed his subtle jabs at her cooking. Dudgeon’s wife, actress Fiona (?) fits very well with his character and often brings some humor out of him. She is a delight in her role! An excellent match and improvement over poor Nettles boring and very unattractive “wife.” (Jane Wyman) As did Nettles, Dudgeon also goes through a few different actors as their chief assistant on the show. I will get back to reviewing them later. What I will say now is that some are a better fit for the role and a better fit with either Nettles or Dudgeon. Some I like and a few I don’t but this show is entertaining and suspenseful enough that I will watch and buy the DVDs no matter who is starring. I’ve only seen up through season 20 so I can’t comment yet on what some reviewers are saying about some unpleasant changes with shoving the PC garbage down viewers throats. I did feel a bit of it coming in season 20 but not enough to turn me off to stop watching or buying DVDs. I’m hoping those reviewers were just the overly critical types that freak out even if they see a scene with a couple in bed. The only thing that would turn me off and make me completely done with this or any show is if they start having these current made up gazillion sexual deviant types, geez, is anyone normal or just gay anymore? I can take gay no problem but that’s it. The current politics disaster the USA is in and the progressive agenda has made up all these freak things, so being white, black, straight or gay isn’t even normal anymore. Bruce Jenner types and freaks beyond that….no way, no how for me. I’m starting to let my anger get me off topic a bit so I’ll stop. All I can say is seasons 1-20 are great in my opinion. If and when they change to what some reviewers mentioned, then I stop and find another British show to watch. By the way, I have a friend who has the same tv and movie taste as well as liking many of the same shows as myself and though I’ve not checked into it yet, she’s been watching some Korean tv shows and very much enjoys them. Also I highly recommend Australias “Miss Fisher Mysteries” but the original version, starring Essie Davis…not the one called “Modern.”
