For what it’s worth I’ve read most of Tolkiens works. The Silmarillion, Children of Húrin, the Fall of Gondolin, and others. Of course also LOTR and the Hobbit many times over. I’ve heard the complaints, but for me this show brought me back to Middle Earth and the fantasy world I love. Is it perfect? Maybe not. Is it entertaining? Yes. Are the first two episodes kind of slow? Maybe yes. But you have to expect a TV series to have a different pace than a movie. Why did they only spent 2 minutes on the first age? They don’t have rights to the Silmarillion so we should be grateful we even got 2 minutes. Of course I want to see Morgoth, Ungoliant, and Ancalagon on the screen and maybe one day we will.
As for the music it was surprisingly good. The music is not as good as Howard Shore, but he caught lightning in a bottle. Can’t reproduce what he did. Bear McCreary has done a fine job. He’s kind of a mix between John Williams and Howard Shore.
Some people are mad about the elves short hair, or women having a lead role. To that I say open your mind. Middle Earth is on the planet Arda. Certainly there is diversity on an entire planet. And to be honest LOTR was so male dominate in terms of main characters, it’s refreshing seeing some women take some leads. I’m looking forward to the rest of their first season and seasons to come. The show is not perfect so far, but when I was young there were no fantasy shows even close to this. Fantasy lovers should be overjoyed to have Rings of Power and other fantasy shows to enjoy on their TVs. Let’s be happy about what we have, have some fun and not be so critical.
