I think most people who are criticising the movie for how the Personality of the family is written with contrast to what they have learned from the books and what they preach is EXACTLY what the writers wanted to show. This movie was not of a perfect man. Knowledge does lead to certain amount of narcissism which here, took Ben on a ride and made him lose a lot of things including his sanity. Nowhere has the movie mentioned that their lifestyle or they were perfect. They were as imperfect as the low IQ humans they referred to were and that was the whole point of it.
I dont see any reason to criticise the script but rather laud how they have tried to show a man who is trying to live a life out of philosophy, trying to make things perfect ends up in a mess. He was TRYING to become what he thought he should. That is exactly what he means when he says "This was a beautiful mistake. But a mistake." You see the Protagonist realising his delusion.
The people criticizing didn't get the point. They are thinking from a notion that their certain lifestyle and knowledge should produce a good result and not confused human beings but in reality, that is very very much possible. The whole movie was supposed to be about imperfection out of a strive to be perfect. Ruining their lives with an intention and delusion of helping them.
You can clearly see his narcissism when he embarrasses his sister and her children by showing them how low IQ they have. And that is what makes this movie beautiful.
And there are people who are saying it is not realistic. IT IS A MOVIE. IT IS FICTION. THEY ARE CHARACTERS. IT IS A STORY. Movie is not about realism, it is about storytelling.
I usually dont write reviews but there were 1 stars because of lack of understanding of the movie and having the expectation from the characters exactly what Ben had. And that was the whole point!
