I watched this a long time ago but got reminded of it today and felt like writing a review.
What I remember...
-First, possibly the worst thing: the milking thing... it made me seriously uncomfortable, like no joking. These are the turtles, my beloved characters, and that scene and the constant use of the word milking, like I don't understand how that is okay, it's close to trauma.
-The art style is the only good thing, I remember some pretty scenes.
-I only remembered this after reading some reviews today as if my brain was trying to forget it lol, but I did not like how Donnie sounded so young, it's just so distracting.
-Very bad character writing for the turtles I think, not at all memorable and meaningful given how I remember Raph as only 'the one who needs therapy' and Donnie as the 'weeb', and I don't remember how Leo and Mikey were...I don't mind change, every time the turtles are a little bit different and sometimes more, like the Rise turtles, but I like it, it's part of the fun of watching tmnt for me and I sometimes think about how I would write a tmnt and make my own changes, but this, this is not good character writing.
-Too many pop culture references, it's most of the movie actually, a very lazy thing to do... like I can't believe I listened to three different versions of 'What's Up?' one after another.
-Regarding voice acting, I remember the characters talking over each other, which I think makes the scenes natural and it can be good and Rise did it too, but it's just too much in this one, it's so constant and can be overwhelming.
-I remember the final fight being very anticlimactic, enemies suddenly turning good in a way I felt the movie had not earned the right to do so.
-And finally, just the whole concept of the movie, I feel it's unnecessary. Turtles wanting to be part of the human world, and going to high school in the end, like... I just don't get why. I don't think it's a meaningful additional concept to the TMNT world; the mutants have always been very okay being in their own world, not really caring about the human world, and that has a cozy feeling to it, atleast for me; caring mostly about the family, feeling that brotherly and father and son love...that is what I really love. If I were to make a more modern tmnt movie, I would actually lean more towards that: Social media and all other voices tell you how you should be, maybe the turtles give in to it at first, finding jobs, having disguises to appear human, changing their attitudes, but in the end, they return to themselves and back to the sewers, accepting that one can't be anything they wish for and continue living as true Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the old fashion way. Maybe it's because of my autism coming up with a concept like that, it's the 'unmasking' concept. Speaking of, for a modern version, leaning towards things like an ADHD Mikey and an autistic Donnie would be really cool.
