In the three generations of a prominent Indian family, there is success, but also horrifying tragedy and a mysterious “Condition.” Nothing about this reoccurring streak is ordinary or predictable, so the plot has the feel of a wild river. Along the banks the characters, ranging from an old bull elephant to several beautiful, brilliant, and good sari-clad females, are each a given a realistic and consistent personality. In addition, the setting is a little-known part of India, Kerala, which allows us to glimpse an old and complex culture developed over centuries in an unwelcoming swamp. As the author is a medical doctor, there are lessons on illness and anatomy.
If you recall Verghese’s earlier best seller, Cutting for Stone, there is enough similarity to know you will like this too. The extra depth of this work, though will make it a classic.
