I see that most people disliked the movie because they didnt understand what was going on or the message of the movie. It went literally over their heads. I will explain but it involves spoilers.
The reason why the characters dont come together or are distrustful of one another is a reflection of todays political assembly, in the US, people on a grander scale are doing that right now. With socioeconomic and racial divides. We have entered into an era of disinformation, conspiracy therorys. Especially when it comes to global events such as the war in ukraine or the fighting in Israel.
The main enemy in the movie was not Iraq or China or Korea or Russia, it was in fact a coup de'tat by members either of the US government or other powerful individuals in the US that wanted to seize power for their own ends. Similar to what Trump tried to do with the riots in Washington DC.Aided by the russians, chinese, we dont know, but it doesnt matter. These nations today have been involved in hacking and attempting to alter political outcones to put someone thry want into power who is more amenable to their policies. Like Orban in Turkey or Lukashenko in ukraine.
The movie is a warning to watch out for individuals who create an us or them narrative to try and polarise people for political gain, in the end, thry always end up destroying the foundations of society.
Similar to Carl Sagans warnings in 'Shadows of forgotton ancestors'.
These powerful individuals in the US were the ones responsible for an attack on their own country ( similar to what happened in the movie V for Vendetta)
And if we are not kinder to each other, we will invite the end of democracy.
Watching friends at the end of the movie was a reference to our obliviousness on whats happening in the world today, even when it is falling apart. Which is a bit funny since most of the audience are focusing in the details of the plot and not the message.
Which seems to be true since the to its meaning, the majority of the auduence are oblivious.
