Spoiler
The camera work gave me a head ache. Too much spinning to convey an emotion but not needed. Story line is confusing, I felt sorry for James (main character) who was suppose to be some sort of privileged, rapist "villain". First he's a liar and hid major events from his wife (wrong), but simultaneously he is beautifully, a tad brutally, and openly honest with his wife about his life's choices. He is also very present when conversing to her the real truth'. And a present father. Rare.
His emotions felt real as though he truely was remorseful, wrong and sincerely sorry about his past. I felt he really did need defending, despite his stupid past choices. He is now a grown up who seems to be taking responsibility and being open about it too.
He was honest, foolish but caring - as far as telling his wife every extra detail of the night at the uni party where him and Tom messed up. He had no gain but to unburden himself and share with his wife what he was carrying mentally(which was then used against him cunningly). The story showed he was truely (as a teen) trying to rescue and help his best friend not make more of a fool of himself (caring, foolish) - in turn carrying a burden for himself.
The story also showed him again sincerely' asking Holly if she was ok after he unintentionally raped "?" her. This story showed an entitled foolish but genuine boy trying to find his way with little to no correction in his life by those around him. (no excuse to rape but i was not convinced it was by Hollies drunken, pleased glances to bump into him - to then disapprove as he progressed).
The fact he was so honest and open with his wife (also attempted to be on the night their friend died) confused me. He needed help. Definitely hold him accountable, yes, but the movie wasn't very convincing that he was that devilish, just simply foolish...and needed more correction from his wife, parents and others from the start, rather than an "all goes" attitude.
Maybe my thoughts about his demeanour that was portrayed is the irony of it all...But I don't believe so. His wife defended him blindly from the start because she wanted the 'popular boy' to be hers so badly, then suddenly wants revenge because she realises she shouldn't have found her whole identity in him to start with and should have helped correct him more.
I am rambling because...
Stressful!. LOL
