I think the adaptation does a good job with the CGI, fight scenes, and costume. However, where it lacks most is the characters’ dynamic. The characters are so dull! Zoro lacks all emotion; Sanji is boring and so is usopp; Luffy is just a hungry boy who lacks the hyperness his anime predecessor; and Nami is your typical girl boss stereotype.
I understand that this is a live action and it’d be weird if they acted exactly as the characters did in the anime…but it’s like they didn’t even try.
I don’t blame the actors for this however. I think the actors are fine actors. What I blame is the script. In other words, the characters are dull, because the script is dull. The script isn’t funny. It isn’t fun or quirky or anything. It is just downright dull.
Now the characters shine when the focus is on the plot. However, One Piece is so much more than the plot. I’d even argue that the plot is of little importance. What I love most about One Piece, and what I hear others love most about One Piece, are characters. We love the characters’ personalities and their banter. And yet that is the very thing that is missing in this live action and the result is boring and unsatisfying. And I’m genuinely surprised that the other reviewers seem to disagree….
