The book invokes strong emotions, but it does not analyse or tries to solve the problems created out of alcoholism, depression and pessimism. Raskolnikov's victims seem to be mere shadows and not women of flesh and blood. Ultimately, Raskolnikov, the bad guy, escapes with a punishment too lenient and bags a pretty girl too in bargain. The other guy, Sividriglialov, or whatever is he called, commits suicide inspite of having spared Dounia.
