This was as close to perfect as a movie can get. The SFX serve the plot, which is just so well crafted. I was drawn in by the plight of post WWII Japan and these characters that I almost forgot this was a Godzilla movie. Until it becomes one. And it is head and shoulders above all others in that respect. The SFX aren't quite Hollywood level. But they ARE incredible, and even more so when you discover the budget. But you won't be watching this movie for that: it's too good a story. Too well acted. Too well directed. The only issue I had with is the very final shot. I didn't like that one shot. I'd cut it, if it was my call. It detracts somewhat from the ending.
