Fun n kinda crazy The two main characters complement each other well Storyline interesting Comedy a bit over the top at times but mostly good stuff I went w a gal pal to th theatre n we laughed a lot When we got up to leave there were only three other people in th theatre all young guys. I asked one who looked nice if he liked it and a little sheepishly, he said “yes” :) Wish we’d talked a little more to him cuz it’s def more of a gal film. But I’d like to see it again n that’s not very common. The womens friendship n what being friends means was explored in an interesting way.

I've watched this film twice because there's so much heart and wisdom in it. Yes, there's flaws but they're far outweighed by all else worth feeling and thinking about. It's an especially great film to watch because of the troubled world we live in today. Too often people reach for simple answers to complex questions. This almost always seems to make things worse. "Cider House Rules" shows us real life situations that are not always easy to look at and think about. I appreciate so much that he does not descend to a pollyannaish, world-view about the problems. Most particularly, for women, the help given to pregnant girls and women who are pregnant, sometimes through no fault of their own (i.e. rape) and who are too young, too poor or just not willing or able to become a mother. It's such an honest film. Thanks to all who created this, esp. John Irving

Wow ! A terrific farce based on the hottest issue burning through America for years. In Roe vs. Wade, the fight for women to control our own bodies was pretty much settled law....and then comes "Jane", a women who became a symbol of both pro-choice AND anti-choice. At the end, it became clear she was someone who was primarily USED big-time by the far right and the religious zealots. (see film AKA Jane Roe) . This film Citizen Jane has Laura Linney take us on a wild ride through the political fight over a complex, gut-wrenching issue of our times. At 81 I have fond memories of all the change that happened in the 60's and 70's for women. This film was about an earlier time that was a rigid time to be a female. The fifties weren't "happy days" for many of us. When I went to my Catholic high school 25 year reunion, it was nothing but sad. These girls were smart and hard working but most had just gotten married and had babies. Several bragged about their grandchildren. (nothing wrong with that if you did something beyond produce children with all that educational talent. America lost a lot by losing these girls and women. I thought I'd feel good about having gotten a Masters and good jobs in spite of initially marrying the wrong man and having four children. But I didn't feel good. It was depressing. This film brought it all back. Julia Roberts and the other actresses were great but just revisiting "the old days' was hard to see, esp. since moving to Florida where it feels like I'm back in the 50's. It's a film worth seeing to get a look at history for the roles both genders unfortunately played in our society and in some places still do, as if nothing was learned. Sometimes it feels like we take two steps forward and at least one back. In Florida, it's like 2 or 3 back.

Though it has it's shortcomings, it is by far the most powerful adaptation of Atwood's tale of two genders, struggling in a society where men have a disproportionate amount of control. As an 80 year old American woman, it is one story that resonates with me historically. I remember the 70's too well and the pressure for girls and women to play rigid roles such as catch a man, get married and have babies before thinking enough about those things. If we grew up learning that marriage and motherhood was an escape hatch out of life and life can be hard for us all, too many of us took that exit only to find out AFTER the children were here and very often, the man was gone that it was a fool's choice. Our bodies don't have to be all or most of what we are. Feminism inspired many of us in spite of what the "boys" are trying to do with it today. Fortunately, feminism also inspired good men and they are our brothers in this fight to empower us all. Film has been a powerful tool to either reinforce the status quo or help us see the way. Atwood was ahead of her time and the Hulu series has great acting and a complex story that helps reveal powerful truths to show us the way.

What a powerful film. The Ukrainians are just great people and Ukraine almost looks like a fairy tale country, with beautiful artistic buildings and quaint homes. It's hard to watch what's happening to it by Putin right now and they just must win. Europe and America and all freedom-loving countries have to be rooting for Ukraine. Putin looks like a mad man and of course, we just hopefully just got rid of one who closely identified with him, One wonderful thing to see was how diverse Ukraine was/is and yet they all came together with great love for their country and such amazing courage.
