I could not put this book down. The writer evokes the unforgiving territory of Alaska by placing John, the main character directly in the midst of it's life or death scenario. It is a survival story of great spiritual death and beauty. The relationship of John and Karl, another survivor is exquisite. Karl's sacrifice was beyond stunning. The juxtaposition of Helen's search for her husband provided some relief from the unrelenting agony of John's survival story. This story described a part of WWll that l was unaware of - the invasion by the Japanese on American soil in the Aleutian Islands.
I highly recommend this book to anyone. This book has everything; adventure, spiritual depth, great writing and an heroic love story.
