Bought this album when it came out and it has always resonated with me. No set style to it, but the songs are strong and the recording very layered. The only song I felt could benefit from being stripped back was “Here Comes the Flood”, which Gabriel did revisit later on. A bloody good first solo album from a man I see as something of a genius.

I have read numerous reviews of this album, most of them superficial desperate pretentious twaddle that simply illustrate how little the reviewer bothered to engage with the music. It is a sometimes difficult listen. Gabriel is complicated and inconsistent as a personality and this comes through in his songs. But those songs are passionate and articulate, they have power and some truly resonate. I have played this album more times than I can count and I still often find something new. “Signal to noise” and “The drop” can still move me to tears even after all this time. Give this album a go, it’s worth it.
