Saw the first season. Had almost given up by episode 6 ...but then carried on somehow to finish the season. It did pick up somehow in the end..
My verdict..
It is not as good as HIMYM, which was actually iconic.
The forced jokes, laborious sequences, artificial bonhomie, irritating laughter track ... all gives it the wannabe feel. Trying too hard to recreate the magic of HIMYM.
The main reason of the success of HIMYM was the stellar cast whose performances really owned the franchise. They were effortless and had personified the personalities of their characters...and were thus loved by the audience (so much so the guest appearance of Cobie Smulders' Robin in the final episode of season 1 really lifted the episode... Emphasizing the difference in calibre).
Overall the entire cast of HIMYF do not match up to that of HIMYM.
Hillary Duff does just enough & has the credentials but her performance somehow fails to stand out as the main protagonist. Infact Kim Catarall's future Sophie has more spunk & pizazz and one would have loved to see same energy in the present day Sophie. The difference is so stark that the two Sophies do not seem like the same person at all.
Chris Lowell is lovable but his character does not evoke the same passion, exuberance or whackiness of Josh, Neil & Jason's rendering of Ted, Barney & Marshall.
Francia Raisa with her over the top expressions and hamming comes across as unconvincing ..and at times annoying.
While Tom Ainsley's fake British accent & stiff body language becomes downright irritating.
And Tien Tran is an actual non actor, without doubt.
Ashley Reyes & Josh Peck do well in their linear character arc till now in whatever little was expected of their role in the current script...but any challenging performance twist would be interesting to see how they manage.
But the most surprisingly natural performance has been of Suraj Sharma... most believable, natural and with good comic timing.
The other problematic thing was the direction & editing itself... The start of movements & dialogues of actors in a scene, visibly starting off from stationery position moving only after a few secs of cameras rolling, actors finishing their scenes & stopping, waiting for the cameras to stop rolling ... All these editing flaws leaves a very bad continuity issue as well as makes the entire production unrealistic & amateurish with those flaws.
