Clearly this movie will not have universal appeal. Although relatively star studded, it's very quirky. Its narrative is based on internal journeys and there are various nods to philosophy and esoteric religions which is probably a bit offbeat for most people. But the script is quite snappy, there are lots of comical moments and the acting is very good. Jude Law especially is amazing in this movie. I first watched it when it was not long out and having just rewatched it again I think it stands up really well.

I watched with my daughter as we've read the Harry Potter books together and seen the movies. I found the film disappointing. There's some charming touches where you are given glimpses of the wizarding world but there is a lot more explosions, chases and special effects than narrative or character development. By the latter part of the film when the reveals take place I didn't feel very involved. I thought Jude Law and Johnny Depp were interesting to watch but they were given very little screen time. Generally it all felt like one of the huge number of American movies that are sold in the year they are released and then are forgotten.
