This film was a missed opportunity. Whilst the performances are mostly ok (Jared Leto’s forced acting being a notable exception), the directorial choices, lighting and editing are lack-lustre for the most part. Overwhelmingly slow and unfathomably preoccupied with boring personal interactions, the operatic theme of this true story doesn’t really get to shine. The sexy design world is mostly left in the background. The audience is left pining with unfulfilled expectation at what could have been delicious, elevated and super lush. Instead it feels drab, dirty, and looong; the directors cut of a B-grade tele-movie.
Scott should stick to subjects he can successfully illustrate with his gritty brand of realism. It didn’t work in the context of high fashion where fantasy and lush imagery is largely the appeal.
