Plays fast and loose with period detail and about 30 minutes too long. Imagine The Draughtsman’s Contract meets Orlando, with a peculiar soundtrack and you’ll understand the atmosphere. Painterly cinematography, stunning costumes and settings, the three central female roles are bravura performances, but the writing and character development is two dimensional; it’s hard to emotionally connect. It’s enjoyable, but isn’t one of the greats.
