As a woman I don’t watch what I consider ‘chick flicks’ nor looking at the covers of the novels would I even consider picking up what appear to be shallow corny relationship narratives..and then I saw the preview of the series of two young girls in grungy clothes with scabbed knees running through a loud crime filled neighborhood in 1950s Italy and thought “I’ll give it watch”.. and once I did I was hooked..so much so that when season 1 ended I bought the next 3 installments of the story..I don’t think I have read such an in-depth examination of what goes on in the heads and hearts of real women and their lifelong friendships with each other..The reverence, jealousies, the love and the even the hates..The two females are so different from each other they seem to play off of and use each other to get where they want to be, making each finally whole in the end. The ‘brilliance’ in these novels is the author’s words themselves..
