Richard Webster presents a very well informed discussion of the contention brought about by Salman Rushdie's novel The Satanic Verses. Webster critiques the hypocrisy of the stance taken by many Western Liberals in their "selective" defence of freedom of speech without the slightest acknowledgment of the historical backdrop of western antisemitism. His argument, although made in 1990, remains valid and current today.
This is a must read for anyone that sees themselves as open-minded and hopes to better understand some of the reasons for strife between the West and Islam.
