Like many others, I recognized both the brutality and beauty, the excellent performances by Bale and Pike, and the short shrift given the chief and his family. For the most part I liked it and that made the final scene hard for me to accept. It seemed entirely unearned. While I could buy the changes in the captain as credible up to a point, I found the romantic aspect of him climbing aboard the train out of character.
