A barely adequate script which took 2 hours to tell a story which could have been told adequately in an hour or less. It seemed that the director knew as much and found it necessary to include an overly slow tour of the Vatican between each brief bit of dialogue simply to extend the run time to a full 2 hours. I found there were no real surprises in the story and knew what the inevitable outcome would be within a few minutes. I was earnestly hoping for a thought provoking script of the depth and complexity found in the best films of the mid 1950's and early 60's. Despite the shallow depth of the script, the film is saved by the excellent cast who do their best with what little they have to work with. In the end I found the film to be adequately uplifting especially in the times in which we currently live and that adde seed one star to my opinion of the film. I just wish the script writer and producers would have had more respect for the intelligence of their audience and let the audience draw its own conclusions, be that feeling uplifted or not, relying on the individual conscience of each audience member..

A good read if you're interested in World War 1 aviation, early aerobatics, or the view of the trenches, no man's land, and battle as viewed from the air. The author's, not actually Eddie V. Rickenbacker's, style of writing (prose) is a marvel in itself. Although credited to Rickenbacker, and based on his diary and notes with his consent, the actual (ghost) writer is one Lawrence La Tourette Driggs who has embellished, and at times, simply fabricated EVR's experiences during the war, or replaced those experiences with his own. Regardless it's worth the read.
