Watched Thalaivii this Sunday on 12.09.2021.
The storyline, the depiction of character of a film actress transitioning into a powerful political leader rising through the merciless masculinity which tried to suppress, humiliate and obliterate her by all the means, was nearly hair raising at times and thoroughly entertaining always. More than the extraordinary creativity which a regular moviegoer will definitely relish in this movie I was completely enraptured for full 2.5 hours also because of the wonderful messaging of the 3 things which subtly seep into the viewer. Despite my strong biases against the following 3 things the characterisation and delivery by Kangana Ranaut was so powerful that I was compelled to feel the good side of what I hitherto perceived bad almost as a rule:
1. POLITICIANS
2. FILM-STARS
3. EXTRAMARITAL-RELATIONSHIP
Politicians are generally presented as outright rogue devoid of all moral values. But in the movie I could naturally see respect developing in me for the two roles of MGR & Jaylalitha. That speaks volumes of the impression the movie and characters leave upon you. Kangana & Arvind were natural in the roles delivering it effortlessly.
Film stars, by virtue of what Bollywood has demonstrated in recent times, are frequently deemed to be repulsive individuals with a low moral character, soaked into drugs, dancing to the tune of criminals with no concern for the real life of the masses or the needs of the country. Here I could see Kangana Ranaut very deftly playing the role how a gentle human being even if in the world of cinema can metamorphose into a benevolent political leader provided the right mentor & environment is available.
Last part where the movie could override my negative bias is an extramarital romantic relationship which I had always considered among the vilest things one can do in a society. However the natural closeness which could develop between a man and a woman like MGR and Jayalalithaa in a unique environment of cinema, of long hours in close confinement where they are forced to play intimate, the romantic relationship seemed to develop so very naturally. Further it was amply demonstrated that if both the partners are honest they will still not be cheating others' trust since their closeness is defined and confined by the functional needs of their work and family.
Before signing off I will not fail to mention the references made in Kangana's expressions of Yogeshwar Krishna and his teachings of never leaving the war unfinished. It was in fact the central theme of the movie to showcase the fighting spirit of Jayalalitha. This reference to Krishna was a glorious departure from the Hindu hating script which Bollywood is regularly accused of. The movie is definitely an act of creativity par excellence.
Everyone must not only watch it with family they should make sure that whoever is in their acquaintance they watch it too within this weekend or the next. Kangana and this beautiful creation Thalaivii need your appreciation and support.
