Makato Shinkai has become the Christopher Nolan of anime world atleast for anime movies and well undoubtedly so, because he does create gems. But having that title has almost made it a selling point for newcomers rather than for the actual content and inevitable the fame and power he holds as a director has resulted in the popularity of the movie than for the true reasons such as the storyline, characters, animation and soundtrack. The characters in the film personally aren't ones that I have fully grown attachment towards nor did I hold strong emotions towards them but there were no evidently unlikeable characters. The story of the movie would be something out of the world for new viewers of Makato Shinkai's creations and therefore would come as other-wordly but for the frequents, there was just something missing, the plot did not extend beyond what we hoped for and there were no surprise elements as such. It was more of a feel-good movie but the soundtrack and the animation really set the movie to another bar as it makes an ordinary story quite extraordinary. I recommend people who haven't watched it in the theatres yet to go watch it in the cinemas if it is still running because the opening sequence until the title is shown, will give you goosebumps and the music by RADWIMPS just never disappoints. 4/5 only because the story could have been far better knowing how much talent Makato Shinkai and his team hold.
