Brie's acting is brilliant, but aside from that, this movie doesn't really tell a story. We are left making assumptions about the main character's background, including her obsession with horses, details of her friend's accident, results of the DNA test... oh, and let's not forget the part near the end where Joan happens to see the rear of the horse as it walks by the storefront.... the movie more or less opened with the same scene. What are we to make of any of it? I get that this film is a portrait of mental illness, and maybe even a portrayal of the cracks within our mental healthcare system, but again, I believe every movie should tell a story, and this film falls short of that, in my opinion.
