Vincenzo, while a new fresh breath of air at least in the world of k-dramas and has a lot of good parts to it, has a decent amount of flaws which kind of balance it out to a "meh".
At the beginning, I was very excited as everything seemed very promising. The cinematography, music, writing, and acting seem all on point, but once it hit the big villain reveal, it kind of fell apart from me. (Note: For the purposes of not spoiling, the villain's actor will simply be called the vactor)
The vactor, while he's not bad in the role, lacks something for me which becomes more glaringly bothering as the series goes on. I'm currently on episode 12 and at this point in the drama, I lost interest in the villain completely. On paper the villain is perfect, a soulless monster who will do anything to win and stay in power, but upon execution, it falls a bit flat.
Another part of the series that was great at first are the main characters themselves. Vincenzo and Hong Cha Young at first felt like vigilantes who fight for the greater good and break laws that need to be broken, but by episode 12 they just feel like cruel people who are excusing their actions by saying it's all for justice. The one scene that bothers me the most is the scene where they are interrogating the assassins they know are working for the villain they end up (spoiler alert) killing them. This feels so out of character especially for Hong Cha Young who in the past seemed, at least for me, uncomfortable with the idea of killing someone as she even states to Vincenzo at one point that if he did kill someone before, it would feel as if he was someone else entirely and unreachable.
The last part that I had a problem with was the sudden shocking shifts in tone and mood. This show is full of these shocking shifts. Like one scene the main characters literally just murdered some people but then the very next scene is with them joking around with the tenets and smiling like THEY JUST DIDN'T KILL SOMEONE EARLIER. These tone shifts feel like the writers of the show were like "oh shoot the main protagonists seem like they're getting too morally bad, let's just shove this comedy scene in to emphasize that they totally aren't and are really good people."
Now out with the negative and in with the positive. The cinematography is absolutely gorgeous and on point in some of the scenes in the drama. For example, there is one scene where Vincenzo smokes on a bridge and oh my god this was the best smoking on a bridge shot I've ever scene in any t.v. show or movie. There are beautiful shots like these sprinkled all throughout the scene and I thank the director for inserting these in as they heal my soul and bring me life again.
The acting is also pretty solid. Song Joong Ki works very well as Vincenzo and in the more emotional Vincenzo scenes, really pulls out his acting chops. Jeon Yeo Bin really brings out the spunk, childish craziness, and also the emotional vulnerability out of Hong Cha Young and it doesn't feel like she's over acting at all even in some of Cha Young's crazier moments. Another favorite of mine is Kwak Dong Yeon who just kills it as villain's younger emotionally traumatized brother.
Overall, Vincenzo, even with all it's flaws is one of the better k-dramas I have seen, plus it also has the potential to still land on a good note as I have said before, I'm only on episode 12 and there are still 4 more to go.
