Not a review but my admiration for the movie.
There is a shot in the movie where everyone is celebrating Gangubai , in the background her poster is on a movie poster . It's a beautiful , impactful shot as it implies that ganga may not have become a movie star but has become something bigger than that. This film is many things , it is about the dark history of prostitution, a personal journey of a woman who was betrayed by her lover, a failed attempt of a woman to find love , the difficulty of woman, a fight against the society. But what i find interesting is the journey and transformation of ganga to gangu. How gangu from a innocent film loving girl "Ganga" became a face of not prostitution but representation of woman's struggles. I love how they refer to ganga as another person as she died the day she lost her " dignity" as society refers. The speech beautifully explains the topic of losing dignity or virginity. Gangu explains she doesn't lose in one night like others. She gains it everyday.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali doesn't assign some over the top toxic male villains. The scale is organic. From a toxic, violent man to Razia a politician to a school or as the school represents a blind belief or old school thought if you will. At the end it's society who are the " villains" for not just gangubai but to all prostitutes and women. For this is not just the best of alia but for even Sanjay Leela Bhansali. He immersed me into the dark yet colourful movie , immersing me into the world of kamathipura but also into the journey of Gangubai Kathiawadi
The use of songs is very interesting in this movie. Jhume re Gori and dholida have a similar choreography and shot in one take. The first one ends in a glimpse of hope and another ends loss of hope. In my interpretation, the song dholida takes place after the scene of gangu trying to contact her mother which ends with the loss of hope. Dholida is a visual representation of gangu trying to gain the old life which presented through her repeating the dance of jhume re Gori which has her dancing in a circle , which is shot in one take. It ends with her walking away from the celebration as it means she cannot revisit or relive her past. It's beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. Only Sanjay sir can use a song to represent a character's agony
