As a military mom, it took guts to watch this movie. I was really glad I did. The movie is raw and real. It is also visually and emotionally stunning; a transcendent ride outside of ordinary levels of awareness. We get to fully occupy the space of deep despair and boredom but are rewarded with paradoxical glimpses of beauty in the midst of horror; and larger patterns of order that makes sense out of the seemingly senseless. And, yes, the dog gets kicked - a shocking, brutal and senseless act. Just like war. I pray I never experience the depths of hell that could precipitate such an action. But moral superiority is an insufficient response. It lies at the very crux of war. This film will trip that lid and the lid on life and death itself.
