First of before I begin my review I just want to say am not just rating cause I'm a biased Zelda fan who likes every Zelda game no matter what it is. This game is amazing! It blew me away in many aspects. Lets start with the gameplay. You are given 4 unique abilities each allowing you to do a ton of things:
Firstly the Ultrahand which much like Magnesis from BOTW which allowed you to move metal objects. Unlike Magnesis however Ultrahand allows you to do so with any object. Eg. You could even just take a random mushroom and lift it into the air. That and also the rotating and attach options really allow you to get creative and build all sorts of structures with your imagination.
Infact that who most of this game is catered towards. If your someone that likes to experiment with weapons but wasn't a fan of Breath of the Wild's durability system then that too has been resolved with the marvellous ability to fuse weapons with any items such as a rock, a barrel, a pot and much more. This not only takes care of weapons that are weaker breaking easily but also allows you to experiment with various combinations testing the limits of what this game can do. I've always been someone that likes to experiment with exploits and testing what can be done beyond what video games allows you to do.
Ascend allows you to have Link reach above areas that have a ceiling within a reasonable distance. There is a blue glow to indicate an ascend can be done to ascend Link quite literally through the ceiling wall and rise above it. This is a huge timesaver for speedrunners as well as those who found needing to climb to be dreadful. Is more of an accessibility option if anything.
Recall which is another one of my favourite abilities allows you to rewind time. Normally this was already crazy in my head as it can be used to reverse any clockwork gears to reach areas but you can do way more than just that. You can also use ultra hand to move an object to a certain place and back and set a record. Then with recall retrace the path which will rewind the whole path taken. That is amazing! Can't wait to see how far people go with this.
There are also one other ability you get in the game later called Autobuild which allows you to store your creations and recreate later with enough Zonai material. Yet very amazing!
For those that are finding a frustrating time throughout the game, there will be a TOTK guidebook coming next month as a physical hardcopy and softcopy. I already preordered cause I knew I was going to be binge reading that.
Next let me talk about my experience with the story. Tears of the Kingdom's story unlike with BOTW is much more expansive and finally we have a ganon with personality and voice acting as well as actual dungeons. Its also thrilling to have 3 layers of exploration with underground, surface and the sky. This makes for triple the excitement while also retaining our favourite Goron, Rito, Gerudo and Zora tribes from BOTW! There are even returning characters such as Sidon, and Riju as examples that now play a much larger role to supporting Link.
I got this game for $46.88 which imo was a steal for the quality I was getting. Tears of the Kingdom is for newcomers or longtime fans of the Legend of Zelda. It may not have the same nostalgic music we loved from the classic 3D Zelda games in their dungeons but this game isn't meant to be that. Its meant to be a sequel to BOTW carrying out what that game did and building upon it. I believe TOTK does just that and anyone should give it a try today.
