The idea that if I didn’t like this movie then I must be dumb doesn’t work on me to only post a positive review. Nice try though. I did not like this movie. I know enough about the project to feel justified in asking “Was this the script Gilliam could not get properly made for the last 25 years?” Because if it is, then yeah. I can see why it was a struggle . But if that project became “I will instead now tell the story of how trying to make this movie drove me insane and THAT will now be the story” then while that would make more sense, it did not prove more enjoyable for me. It felt bitter and frustrated and inside baseball with references to financiers and studio demands. I even found Gilliam’s signature grand production style lacking. The occasional tilted camera angles and three giants near the end didn’t exactly fill the screen with the whimsical vibe Gilliam is known for. Frankly I wasn’t even looking for that but to read other reviews stating that it was all over the place is not something I agree with.
I’m not sure who this movie was for. It wasn’t for me and I accept that but I get the feeling that this movie was for Gilliam himself. Which, while within his rights as a filmmaker, it didn’t work for me when I paid money to see it.
