Unfortunate. Poor writing. I was a fan of Penny Dreadful in its original series, and was excited to see a new cast and story set in Los Angeles in a noir genre. Unfortunately, Logan does a poor job of tapping into the authenticity of the Mexican narratives throughout every character and plays into the surface stereotypes quite often. It’s very evident this was written by a white writer and his imagination of noir and Mexican Americans. I wish he and Showtime would have employed a Mexican co show runner and writer to run this show with him as it would have elevated the genre’s potential. Sadly, this is not a failing of focusing the story on Latinos, it is the failing of having a white writer tell it miserably.
