The Terrifier franchise is one that I have taken great joy in. In years past I have often considered the genre of the grind house horror film dead. The Terrifier movies changed that and I am thankful.
These films are first and foremost a practical effects blood bath, each kill is designed with the intent to make the viewer cringe and wither in their seat.
As a veteran horror fan since the late 80s I thought I saw it all but Terrifier 1, 2 and 3 have proven me wrong.
[Spoilers Ahead]
The first film is simply about a slasher dressed as a clown. A post credit scene shows Art being resurrected by an unseen force.
The second film is about how Art is now an undead paranormal killer. They are actively seeking out a teenager prophesied to stop Art and his Master. This is easily the worst entry in the series due to the long running time and the lack of meaningful content. A lot of the intended story isn't well represented and the viewer will have to make guesses on occasion to what is actually happening.
Finally the 3rd film is about the fall and rise of Art and his Master, about how the antagonist from the first film must confront Art while dealing with PTSD from the traumatic events of the last film.
Not many horror films examine the repercussions of being the survivor of a horror film, the lack of support from friends and family and the lack of belief. I really appreciate this angle of the film and it's done well.
The kills are even better, bloodier and more over the top than the first two films.
The 3rd film retains it's longer running time but they manage to use that time better than in the second film, which often felt like they were wasting my time.
I look forward to more films, this was a fun and amazing carnival of blood, an old school film that many production companies simply do not have the gall to do.
