I attended this film against my will. I’m not into war films. The first world war was horrific and a vile waste of life. This film is immersive. You are caught in it. Living it. I was so surprised how deeply I felt this film. There are many moments that made me think, made me jump, made me wonder, had poignant markers that made me join the dots and made me cry. It’s human and at the end I could barely leave my seat through the tears I was crying. I have always had an immense gratitude of the sacrifices that the First World War generation made, a sacrifice which was mainly in vain, but at the end of this film I was so struck by how many human stories there were and how little appreciation there was, at the time, for these brave men.
