When I found this movie in the closet along with the DVD guide, I wondered whether or not my students would be interested. Because I teach high school Spanish, I was apprehensive about showing a movie featuring two young children. I didn't want my students to feel like they were watching a "kid movie". I previewed it (even though I like to watch some movies for the first time with my students) and was very intrigued. Because of the Cuban dialect, the subtitles were necessary for my students to follow along. The storyline is interesting, the struggles of the characters are endearing, and there are many humurous moments that elicit laughs. Even though the movie is getting old and the action/drama occurs before the cellphone era in Cuba, it gives viewers an authentic view of Cuban life, especially among its students. Finally, I found it very interesting to see the intensity of the sense of community in the communist country. In my opinion, this movie will continue to be a classic Spanish language film, worthy of the accolades it received worldwide.
