Good flick but perhaps a little too on the nose. I thought it captured the essence of our media, culture and politics perfectly. It’s at once grim, absurd, hilarious and sad. The movie holds a mirror up to reality and the reflection isn’t pretty. The wedges driven into our societies by those who would bring down the liberal democracies are all too real. This is exactly how a doomsday scenario would play out. Which I suppose is the point. While many would apply its overall message to climate change, I feel it can also be applied to both the global pandemic and the recent surge of authoritarian politics in the western world. As I said, perhaps a little TOO on the nose.
Great, sometimes deliberately over the top, performances by an all star cast led by the always brilliant Leo DiCaprio and Meryl Streep make this an enjoyable, if sometimes uncomfortable, experience. I’d give it three and a half stars as a rating if that were an option but I’d rather give a four than a three.
Worth the watch.
