Utterly disappointing. I was expecting some deviation from the original story lines to make way for new audiences but I did not expect the last 29 years worth game-established lore and rich story telling to be completely ignored. The writers took so many liberties that the property is only recognizable because of it's iconic characters... of which ALL are overshadowed by the establishment of a new, original character that is ill conceived and totally off brand.
Of course all of this can be forgiven if the film delivers with unadulterated action, no-holds-barred stunts, and over the top violence. Unfortunately the action presented was devoid of inspiration, slow, and mediocre at best. The choreography of the most recent games cut scenes were more impressive than what the movie presented.
The cinematography and VFX were superb, the sound score even had subtle and pleasant nods to the original movie. The costumes had a lot of detail, where detail was called for, but lacked in color... which was unfortunate because again... this franchise is identifiable by it's COLORFUL and icon characters.
As man who grew up playing the arcade cabinet of the very first Mortal Kombat at the local Pizza Hut, I came into this hopeful but cautious. I've followed this franchise, be it from video game, to animated series, to comic book for the last 29 years, and was very excited for a new audience, who perhaps was unfamiliar with the particulars of the game and story to be presented with some form or another of the franchises glory. Instead they get this. Like the butchering of Avatar: The Las Airbender by M. Night Shayamalan, this movie does not do Mortal Kombat justice.
