To say that I found “Life And Death In The Age Of Sail” fascinating would be an understatement, I also found “Bound For South Australia” to be interesting too.
I am trying to write a family saga where a family is emigrating from Cornwall to Adelaide in the mid-1850s.
I found “Life And Death In the The Age Of Sail” and “Bound For South Australia” books to be excellent reference material as I was able to understand the conditions that a family travelling on board a sailing ship during that time would have endured.
I was then able to put my family in those situations and hopefully be able to convey the experience of sailing on one of these emigration ships as close to the truth as possible.
My local library had to borrow the book from the State Library in Brisbane and I think I was the first to read it. I found it to be such an excellent reference book, that I bought my own copy.
For someone interested in 19th century sailing history, I can highly recommend “Life And Death In the The Age Of Sail”.
