I watched this film as it popped up on my Netflix home page, the thing that roped me in initially was the promo video of when Ms. Gruwell plays Keep Ya Head Up by Tupac. I pressed play and started to watch the movie. I was so moved as I got really connected to the characters and each of their backstories. The stories of teenagers who were just a few months older than me so different than the life I am currently living it made me think real hard about how some are raised in such a different and more rough way, how different their lives are, and how many hardships they have faced already at the ages of 14 and 15. It also made me realize the true discrimination and racism that so many people experience on a daily, it's sad to see this happening as really we should all be united as one and I plan to carry this belief throughout my whole life. So many times throughout this movie I got chills running through my body, from the actors, the stories, the music, and the respect and admiration I had for Erin Gruwell. When I realized it was based on a true story it made me cry tears of happiness to think that such an ordinary teacher had come into a class and transformed so many lives for the better. Erin Gruwell inspired them, gave them hope to live their lives and go to college and have better wellbeing than what was currently being given to them. This movie is one that will stick with me for most likely my whole life, I have never felt such strong emotions and connections to a movie, but the story of the freedom writers will stick with me for life.
