I am not an action fan. I am a sci-fi fan. When I watch a series titled “Invasion” I do expect to see something relating to science fiction prior to the 8th episode. First 7 episodes are purely drama-and not even good drama. A horrible portrayal of an American soldier running through Afganistán like a crazy bull, threatening every civilian with his big gun in the most obnoxious manner possible. A cheating husband who attempts to abandon his wife and children after a bomb or “something” hits their neighborhood. The cheating husband’s wife who is supposed to be so highly intelligent that she attended Harvard medical, but her character is so weird that I thought she was lying about being a doctor up until the 8th episode when she was swooped up by the military to help with triage patients while she was out looking for food for the family. She somehow became unable to speak and wasn’t able to tell them she couldn’t go with them because she had children waiting for her. Just weird ridiculous scenarios like that with a mother willingly getting into the back of a military truck to go to an outpost while her children are somewhere waiting for her to bring them food.
If you skip the first 7 episodes you’ll save yourself 7 hours and not miss anything. I guessing the writers were attempting a slow buildup or character development with the first 7 episodes, which I typically enjoy in movies and shows, but it just doesn’t work with this show. I actually started typing this review while watching episode 9. The show is just all over the place with unrelatable characters behaving in unbelievable manners.
There are billions of movies and tv series in the drama genre. So us sci-fi fans are excited when we think we’re getting a new sci-fi series or movie, and that’s why there is so much disappointment with Invasion on Appletv. It is not a sci-fi series—it is a drama series that has a little sci-fi thrown in after 7 episodes.
Two stars because it does actually have aliens at the 8th episode. But so far I’m not even impressed with the cgi in this series.
If you’re craving sci-fi with a little character drama thrown in, you’re better off watching War of the Worlds on Epix.
