I was first attracted to the movie's title and cast. Then in the early scenes, I realized it was about Murchison, and was quite excited to watch a movie about paleontologocal discovery of the past - very interesting! All that only to realize that science is just a backdrop to a rather uninteresting lesbian story, where characters barely converse, their love scenes happen out of the blue and there is no real story. It's pretty obvious the goal was to show a sex scene with Winslet and Ronan, and not much else. Boring and a waste of an opportunity to show a true story of a female scientist in the 18th century.

A far cry from the book it is based on. Very superficial, no detail, no character development, fake conflict, and the characters themselves are not what you'd expect from the book. And I do not recall seeing in the book that Thor could not swim, but perhaps it was mentioned elsewhere? In the book he gets into the water around the raft just like everyone else, i'd be surprised if he could not actually swim. The book is not great either, he is not the best writer but at least it gives a much better glimpse into what was really happening on board the raft and what their daily lives and interactions were like.
