I read the book in English so even though it was well translated, it was difficult to follow. You can actually see and feel the characters, Maria and Anna. The book is about Maria who becomes friends with Anna, and how female childhood and long term friends and friendships affect us way more than we know or admit. It shows how one friendship can have a lifetime impact on one’s life and not something to be taken lightly. Friendships are dynamics and power struggles that mold us and then affect our future choices. The book is mentioning the political climate of Greece at the time, and even though one thinks that is just the background the girls are living in, it actually is symbolic of their friendship-democracy, totalitarianism, communism, changes, fairness, an injustice. That makes this book genius, but again the translation in English can make someone feel lost and at times I wanted to give up reading it. I’m glad I didn’t as the title of the book is only explained in the end.
