The musical numbers distracted and didnt make sense in some cases. At one point, Ebo has a solo dance number while Music is nowhere near him. So is he imaging that or is Music?
Theres also a boy we learn that is interested in Music, you probably gets 10 minutes of screen time, a lovely lad. Who ends up dying. His end just left me feeling angry. His small story was interesting and i hoped was leading to Music having a friend other than Zu and Ebo, but no. He dies.
Music is meant to be the main character and it seems sometimes shes just used as a plot device or that she just “needs to be there”. There’s a point where shes just told to “sit there” in a boxing gym so the neurotypical adults could have a scene. Or when they’re (Zu, Ebo and Music) in the park and music is just in the background.
And Sias self-insert just seems so tacky and odd.
and the ending, oh boy. So i havent touched on Zu much yet. But basically shes peddling prescription medication to people. The ending she is “getting clean” and looking for literally any jobs in a quick montage.. yay! EXCEPT they end it with her figuring that a home will be the best place for Music... the exact same thing she wanted to do the first night she had to look after her, it basically negates the whole point of the “growing as a person and getting clean and a job” montage.
I wouldn’t recommend this movie. Its not “cult classic” bad. Its offensive. I would rate it 0 if i could.
I would like to add, Maddies acting isnt perfect, but she was also forced to do this by a mentor figure who promised to protect her if she did get any backlash, theres a couple of interviews done by Sia explaining Maddie had MORE THAN ONCE been crying on set saying she didnt want to do this. The problem with this movie isnt the acting, but the way the story was told.
DO. NOT. WATCH
