In a word, wooden! Too much stilted dialogue to be enjoyable on anything but a superficial level. Pretty costumes, yes, but still a little over the top. With so many characters available from that period to focus on,why stick with stereotypical ones for the focus. Although the architect, White, was mentioned, I wish there were more real characters of the time period woven in to the story, like in the book, Ragtime, or in Scorcese's Age of Innocence. Simply lacking any real drama.
