The film helped me experience what my family endured in Germany and fighting in Russia while I was a child safe in America. I tried to imagine how I would have handled those situations or whether I would have gone to pieces. I did manage to visit the survivors in 1962 when my US army unit was rotated through Berlin. The Wall was newly up and the city was still a mess. I liked the film, but maybe it was too personal for me to be objective. Even 75 years later, this film must be a real eye opener for some Germans.
