If you set out to buy this album with the expectation that it is an improvement or a remix of the original, then you will hate this album. Having listened to the 1973 album a million times including the various reissues, the last thing I'd want as a fan would be another direct cover of the original album. Thankfully, Roger Waters didn't choose to do a direct cover of the album that he principally wrote alongside the musical genius of David Gilmour, Rick Wright and Nick Mason. Instead, the arrangement is sparse, and the musical passages, solos and musique concrete are replaced with strings, prose and poems. Leaving aside whether the album is necessary and leaving aside the band politics, it's a pleasant listen and an interesting addition to the ever expanding catalogue of DSOTM covers and reimaginations. As far as older artists revisting their best work decades later goes, this is a welcome change to the typical remasters / remix / studio outtakes / unreleased material bundles.
P/S: The drummer is amazing. The album is a masterclass for drummers.
