This is a good show. It’s not as good as The Boys, but it’s pretty close. Here are my pros and cons:
Negatives:
1) The sex/shock/gross factors seem to be there just for the purpose of being there. Sometimes it works, lots of times it doesn’t. The Boys does the same thing, but it’s a direct result of character actions and not there just to be there (well, not as much). In this show, they often miss the mark with these portrayals—although it improves as the season continues.
2) There are a few times where they bring up a mystery and resolve it way too fast. Without getting too spoilery, episode five is the perfect example. They had a really good mystery brought up at the beginning of the episode but resolved it by the end of the episode. It easily could have been something stretched over numerous episodes and had a much bigger impact when the answer was revealed. While not bad, it felt like a lost opportunity for something special.
3) The main character, Marie Moreau?, isn’t likable in the beginning. Once again, this improves as the season goes on, but I think this is one of the reasons it took a few episodes to like the show.
4) Tech-Night. He was such a good villain, and the flaw they gave him was just a little too ridiculous, enough to ruin his character. The flaw could’ve worked, but they were sooo heavy handed with it.
Positives:
1) By the end of the third episode, I found myself hooked, wanting to binge watch. I’m at episode five now, and it hasn’t changed. What more could you want (aside from feeling hooked by the end of episode one :) ).
2) The acting is solid. I particularly like the guy who has the magneto-like powers, the girl named Cricket, and Sam. But all around, I think most of these actors will go on to have extensive careers in acting. They did really well with the casting.
3) The story is focused and there’s rarely wasted screen time. The plot moves and all the characters feel important to the story.
Overall thoughts:
If you like The Boys, I’m confident you’ll like this show. It might take a few episodes, but it finds its stride. At times a little over the top, but the rest of the time it is solid acting, funny, superb character development, and the right amount of action. The Boys is probably my favorite on-going show right now, which I give an A+. This show gets an A- from me. Having only finished episode five, if the quality continues until the end of the season, I will be eagerly looking forward to season 2.
Last thought: When I looked at the google reviews, I was really surprised to see so many 1 star ratings. Shocker, the majority of them griped about “woke liberal political agendas.” The show definitely embraces diversity and questions social standards. So if you find that to be anathema, move on. Otherwise, I think you’ll quite enjoy this show.
