The storyline is all about some photojournalists, especially a young kid who weren't really prepared for walking into the warzone. You don't get any macroscopic details of things like how the war started, or why there were several alliances. The climax seemed to be killing the president in the White House, while the kid grew up a bit after her role model died for her.
