Excellent fighting scenes, but the writing is so razor thin. The characters don't give you much to get attached to and reasons to root for them. Story feels rushed and not fleshed out, and the lack of chemistry between Gyllenhaal and the nurse is very evident.
Gyllenhaal usually picks very good roles, but this is a rare whiff. Odd how you're supposed to root for a guy who acts so non-chalant when bad guys show up, wants to give up, then turned into a cold-blooded murderer. Nothing about him makes you feel he's got a plan of how to take care of the problem....just violence for the sake of it.
The atmosphere is almost non existent. It didn't feel like a roadhouse like in Swayze's version. That had an organic authenticity to it.
McGregor is fine for his role, but with no background about his character....he's just some beefed up generic villain.
