A really really good show for anyone who grew up reading the books as well as anyone who might be wanting to get into them. Leah does such a stunning job of portraying the complexity of Annabeth’s mind as well as the underlying issue of having to ‘earn’ support and affection from your loved ones that the Greek gods impose on their kids. Walker is literally just Percy in real life and on screen. Seriously watch any movie, interview, etc with Walker in it and you’ll see Percy. Aryan is so sweet with big doe eyes he is the absolute essence of Grover’s childish innocence but also inherent maturity due to being older than the rest of them.
I’ll be honest, I didn’t like the way they downplayed Gabe in the show. Maybe they’ll touch on his abuse later on but they made him more of a nuisance rather than a villain. I do love seeing Sally as a strong woman who stands up for herself but it also takes away from the struggle and horrors she had to go through after Poseidon left her.
I will also say the line delivery is sometimes a little awkward but these actors are kids so that’s to be expected. I mean rewatch the first Harry Potter and it’s the same deal.
The show is also very fast. I wish they’d make the episodes longer and also break them up into more episodes. Like are we really getting the tunnel of love AND the lotus casino in the same 40 minute episode?
So yes, there’s a few writing choices and pacing choices that I found… a little dumb. In episode 2 Grover meets up with who I assume is his mom but it’s never explained and never brought up again. Then he goes to the cloven council but we don’t see what they talk about and again it’s never brought up after that. Then he disappears for the rest of the episode and at the very end in the middle of a very emotional and heated argument he comes in with a ‘hey everyone’? Weird choice but okay.
I do love that they got rid of Annabeth’s crush on Luke and also delved into the friendship between him and Percy. This will make the (SPOILERS) betrayal all the more heartbreaking.
Also the scene where Percy burns the blue candy to talk to his mom??? Amazing. Perfect. Spectacular. I love that it’s explained to him that you burn the best part of your meal to speak to one of the gods, but instead he uses it to talk to his mom. Putting her on a platform above the gods including his father. And let’s be honest, she deserves it she’s a queen.
