It seems, rather sadly to me, that I may be in the minority of people who actually really enjoyed this film. I haven't read the book yet but now feel compelled to do so. I prefer to make my own mind up about a film and luckily for me that's exactly what I have done. I believe the criticism is unjust and the reviews have been written by rather snobby academics who want to make a name for themselves and sound clever.
I think it is a difficult, if not almost impossible task, to fully portray total accuracy of a book in a film of just two hours. I'm not actually sure that we need to either.
The film was moving, well acted and beautifully shot. I found the scenes of domestic violence and rape powerful and hard hitting and quite difficult to watch. There were strong messages about judgement, difference, violence against women and racial discrimination.
I have recommended this film to others and advised them to make their own minds up and the feedback has been very positive.
Highly recommended.
