It’s inevitable that when a book is adapted into a movie/TV series… things will change. In the case of Lessons in Chemistry… the inevitable changes are damning to the quality of the show. If you read and enjoyed the book…don’t watch. It’s infuriating watching this after reading the book. There is an essence to Elizabeth Zott that is completely missed by how this story was rewritten in the television adaptation. This version, while probably still appealing if you’ve never read the book, is lacking in substance, whit, and for lack of a better word.. chemistry! Sad to see that none of the plot line from the book carries over to the show. This truly was a remarkable story when written by Bonnie. While a well produced show, it’s small in comparison to what it could have been. If the goal in this TV creation was to produce an intriguing modernized story with bits and pieces from Bonnie’s book, I believe it’s a success.
Sad sad sad, though! This was such a uniquely created character that it really would have be fun to see it manifested and brought to life by way of television!
